Desmond David Hume
BEFORE THE CRASH
A Lance Corporal in the Royal Scots Regiment of the British Army
Served time in a military prison for "not following orders"
An important book to him is Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend; saved it as the last book he plans to read before he dies
In love with Penelope "Penny" Widmore
After released from prison, warned by Penny's father, Charles, to stay away from Penny; called Desmond a coward
Decided to enter a sailboat race around the world sponsored by Charles Widmore in order to prove himself to Charles and win back Penny
Given the sailboat "Elizabeth" by Libby, whom he met in Los Angeles while training for the race
Saw Penny in Los Angeles; she tried to convince him to come back to her; Desmond told her he entered the race to get his honor back
Met Jack Shephard during his tour-de-stad training session
During a bad storm at sea, crashed on the island
Rescued by Kelvin Inman and brought inside the Swan station
Told by Kelvin their replacements would arrive soon
Shown the computer and told about the code that had to be entered every 108 minutes to "save the world"
Told about the vaccine he had to inject to prevent getting sick
Lived in the Swan station with Kelvin for three years
Discovered Kelvin lied to him about the sickness, that no replacements were coming, and that Kelvin repaired his sailboat in order to leave the island without him
Fought with Kelvin, shoved him against some sharp rocks and killed him
Did not enter the code in time and unknowingly caused the crash of Oceanic flight 815
ON THE ISLAND
Alone in the Swan station, and unaware of the survivors of the crash, became increasingly despondent
Finally opened Our Mutual Friend to read it and afterwards kill himself; found a letter from Penny she had placed inside the book before he even entered the military prison; her letter confessed her love for him and told him she would wait for him
Heard Locke pounding on the hatch entrance and is given hope
Held Locke, Kate and Jack at gunpoint trying to figure out if they were allies or hostiles
When the computer is shot and seemingly destroyed, ran to the sailboat and attempted to leave
After sailing for two and a half weeks, ended up back on the island
After Locke destroyed the computer, Desmond realized he could save everyone with the failsafe key by blowing up the Swan station
