Series 3 opens in a quiet house, as a blonde woman gets dressed while Petula Clark's "Downtown" plays on her stereo. A group of her neighbours comes by for a weekly book club meeting. The book club meeting is tense - one member complains about the week's choice, Stephen King's Carrie . It seems like an average day in suburbia. until the house starts to shake, as if in an earthquake. The book club runs outside in time to see a massive airplane - Oceanic Flight 815 - explode and literally tear into two parts overhead. The whole scene has taken place in the Others' village. They spring into action, as the man formerly known as 'Henry Gale' turns to another local - the sinister 'Ethan Rom' - and orders him down to the beach to investigate the crash.
Cut back to the present day, where Jack, Kate and Sawyer wake up, still being held in captivity by The Others. Sawyer is in a large cage; Kate comes to in a changing room and is ordered by Other Tom to shower and change into a dress; and Jack is in a dark, small room encased by a glass wall, being watched by the woman who hosted the book club meeting: Juliette. Kate is taken to a beachside breakfast with 'Henry Gale,' who tells her that the next 2 weeks of her life are going to be 'very unpleasant'. He returns her to a cage opposite Sawyer's.
Juliette tells Jack that she knows all about him, and has a thick file of information with her that proves she is not lying. Jack is distressed and concerned. He flashes back, at various intervals, to his painful breakup with his wife, whom he suspected of cheating on him. Jack tries to take Juliette hostage and goes to open a large door, but 'Henry Gale' tells him that is not the exit. Jack tries it anyway and a massive deluge of water floods in Juliette knocks him unconscious. Juliette reveals that 'Henry Gale''s real name is Ben.
