Tricia Tanaka is Dead

The first flashback of the episode begins with a young, slim line Hurley working on a car with his father. The car will not start, his father advises him to have faith and that we all make our own luck. The car still will not start. He gives him a candy bar and disappears on his motorbike.

Back on the island, Hurley is trying to raise the spirits of Charlie when Vincent appears with a decomposing arm clutching a key. Hurley chases Vincent into the jungle to find that the arm belongs to the corpse of a Dharma janitor in an overturned van. He runs back to camp to tell his unenthused companions that they should all try to get it fixed so they can have some fun. An unwitting Jin volunteers to go with him.

Kate and Sawyer return to camp with palpable tension between them. Relief turns to outrage when Sawyer discovers that his beloved stash has been ransacked. He confronts Hurley about the stash but is soon persuaded to help the budding mechanics when he discovers there is beer in the truck.

The next flashback sees the post lottery winner Hurley filming an interview with news reporter, Tricia Tanaka outside his newly purchased Mr Cluck's Chicken Shack. Tricia and the film crew go inside to film despite Hurley's warning that it's unlucky to go inside before opening. Once inside a meteor hurtles from the Sky, obliterating the Chicken and shack and everyone inside. Upon returning home he tells his mother that his curse has struck once more.

Kate decides to find the others camp to rescue Jack, she informs Locke and Sayid that she is going to find help. Back at the truck Hurley isn't having any luck getting the car started and tells Sawyer and Jin to push him and the van down a steep hill so that he can jump start the vehicle. Despite protesting to Hurley that it is suicide he tells them to do it. Hurley's faith pays off when just before he is about to be killed by a mound of rocks the engine starts and he safely steers the van around them.

In the final instalment of the flash back Hurley learns that his mother has persuaded his absent father of 17 years to come back to convince him that there is no curse. Still hurt by the abandonment of his father refuses to listen and decides to head to Australia where the numbers originated from.

That evening Kate is walking through the jungle when she is startled by Locke and Sayid demanding to know who she thinks will help her find the others. A figure appears from the darkness and we see that Kate was looking for Rousseau. She asks Kate why she should help her. Kate begins to tell Rousseau of the girl named Alex who helped them escape and who she thinks is her daughter.
