A 17 year old Claire with jet black hair awakes in a car with a large cut on her head. She looks ahead to a woman lying on the road. She starts to scream "Mum!".

On the island she awakes to find Charlie has prepared a fruit breakfast. He announces that he has decided to seize the day and take her for a picnic. When they arrive at Charlie's seafront picnic Desmond emerges from the jungle and tells Charlie that of the things he should be doing today it should be hunting with him. Charlie understands Desmond is trying to warn him about his impending death. Suddenly a large flock of birds fly overhead. Claire excitedly shouts that she knows how to get off the island and runs over to Sun and Jin for help. She claims that the birds are migratory and when they land they will be studied by scientists, the plan is to catch one and attach a not to it. Claire asks Sun and Jin for nets to catch fish and asks Charlie to get knifes. Charlie declines saying that he doesn't believe it will work.

Sayid and Locke continue to argue about the location of the others camp and Locke's involvement in detonating The Flame station. Mikhail reveals that he was brought to the island on a submarine. Kate enquires whether the others can travel freely on the submarine. Mikhail tells them that two weeks ago their underwater beacon stopped transmitting it's local signal meaning that it would be impossible to get back. He tells Kate that she could not understand why anyone would want to come back because she is not on the list, he then begins to reveal information about each one of them, he is just about to uncover his knowledge of Locke when he is interrupted by Rousseau. She informs the group that they are here. When they walk further they are in a vast space circled by large metal pillars.

On the beach Jin, Sun and Claire are attempting to capture a bird, their attempts are foiled by a loud gun shot. Desmond then appears from the jungle holding a gun. He apologies but Claire is convinced that he is sabotaging their rescue plan.

The flash back continues with Claire visiting her mother in hospital, as she enters the ward the nurse announces that her mother has a new doctor. As she enters the room the doctor is standing by the bed, he is Christian Shephard. Claire's aunt arrives and immediately wants to know what he is doing here. Claire demands to know what is going on, Christian reveals that he is her father. He later tells her that her mother wouldn't let him see her because he has another family. He advises her not to keep her mother alive for the wrong reasons and to turn her life support off. Claire is upset and leaves.

Sayid guess that the pillars are a security system, Mikhail confirms this but claims it hasn't worked in years. Locke pushes Mikhail into the centre of the pillars at which point he begins having what appears to be a seizure, foaming at the mouth. He then collapses and dies. Locke apologises but his motives for coming along are questioned by Kate and Sayid. They agree that they will have to climb over the security system.

Kate follows Desmond to an isolated rocky cove of the island, she sees him go straight over to one of the birds and picks it up. She demands to know how Desmond knew where to find the bird. Desmond decides to tell Claire about his deathly visions involving Charlie.

Kate, Sayid and Locke come to a clearing in the bushes and see the others camp, they also see Jack running towards them. Before he can reach them he catches a ball and starts laughing with one of the others.
