"Confirmed Dead" opens with two underwater vehicles searching the ocean floor. A voice says that their gauges are picking up magnetic anomalies - and they suddenly come across the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815 (which they recognize). Cut to a news report: The news reader says that all of the passengers aboard Flight 815 are "confirmed dead." A man in Massachusetts sits watching the report, crying. An unseen woman asks him why he is crying. He says "I don't know." This is DANIEL FARADAY.
Cut to the present: A helicopter is being whipped around in a windstorm. Daniel Faraday is pushed out of the chopper and parachutes to the ground. He gets up and hears people approaching (he tucks a gun into his waistband) - it's Jack and Kate.
Daniel, Jack, and Kate walk through the forest. Daniel explains that there are 3 more people with him, but he's not sure where they are. He's shifty and nervous; Jack and Kate are wary. They give Daniel their phone - he calls someone named George. Daniel tells George the chopper went dead in a weird electrical storm. George asks to be taken off speakerphone, and Daniel excuses himself. Jack and Kate are seriously suspicious.
Cut to Locke in another part of the forest, who is leading his "group." Sawyer asks why they're headed that way, and Locke says he needs to visit a cabin. Hurley says that the cabin is in another direction, which draws confused and concerned looks from Locke and Ben, who wonder how Hurley knows about the cabin. Locke tells Sawyer that he was told to go this way by Walt.
Sayid and Juliette sit on the beach. Sayid is worried that the 'rescue' hasn't arrived. Juliette makes him even more wary when she says that maybe Ben is right - maybe they are coming to kill everyone.
Daniel, Kate, and Jack pass a metal box filled with gas masks in the forest. Jack asks what is going on - and Daniel utters a nervous line: "Rescuing you. I can't really say that's our primary objective." Jack roars back: "Well, then, what is?!"
Back with Locke and Sawyer, Sawyer makes fun of Locke following the instructions of a "taller ghost Walt." Locke tells everyone he was shot - and he would have died if he hadn't had his kidney removed years earlier.
Daniel, Kate, and Jack find MILES STRAUME, a colleague of Daniel's, knocked out on the rocks. They approach him, and Miles wakes up and pulls his gun, accusing them of killing Naomi. Kate denies this, saying Locke did it.
FLASHBACK: Miles in a house in California - he is talking to a woman about her dead son. It appears he is some kind of paranormalist. He uses a vacuum cleaner-type device and talks to an unseen spirit, and finds a bunch of money hidden in the wall. He is a tense, angry dude.
Back on the island, Miles demands to be taken to Naomi's body - he'll know for sure if Jack and Kate killed Naomi.
Back with Locke's group, Ben taunts Sawyer into beating him up. The usual Linus mind-games. Ben insists that he has info they will need later.
Back with Jack's group, Miles is talking to Naomi's dead body. He confirms that Jack and Kate didn't kill her. Miles says they are going to look for their 3rd team member. Jack says that Miles needs to drop his gun. Miles laughs him off until Jack says that his friends are in the jungle pointing guns that Miles and Daniel's head. Miles doesn't believe him, until a shot rings out and Juliet and Sayid come out of the forest.
FLASHBACK: Tunisia - an archaeological dig. A red-haired British woman examines the bones of a polar bear - she digs a little deeper and finds an old leather belt with a Dharma logo on it. This is CHARLOTTE LEWIS.
Back on the island, Charlotte hangs upside down over a river. She frees herself, falls into the water, and gets up to find Locke looking at her.
Locke interrogates Charlotte, who asks a lot of questions of the survivors herself.
Jack's group traces Charlotte's transponder, but Locke has tied it to Vincent's collar.
ANOTHER FLASHBACK: A bearded, Big-Liebowski-looking guy watches the news reports about the Oceanic 815 find, but he's dubious. He calls a number onscreen and says that the picture they are showing of the supposed pilot is fake - that's not the pilot. He knows, he says, because he was supposed to be the pilot that flew Oceanic Flight 815. This is FRANK LAPIDUS.
Cut to Frank on the island. He shoots a flare gun. Locke's group sees it - Charlotte wants to go to her crew, but Locke says no. Suddenly, a shot rings out - Ben has SHOT Charlotte - but she's still alive - she was wearing a bulletproof vest.
ONE MORE FLASHBACK: Naomi is talking to Matthew Abbadon. They are discussing their "team" (aka the helicopter crew from this episode) and the covert operation they are going to undertake. Naomi asks what they should do if they run into survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Abbadon is very firm. "There WERE no survivors of 815," he insists.
Jack's group are in discussions about using the helicopter to get back to the freighter. Miles screams out the truth of their mission: They are there to capture Benjamin Linus. Miles shows a photo of Ben.
Back with Locke's group, Locke is about to shoot Ben, figuring he's had enough. Ben begs for his life, saying "ask me anything!" Locke asks what the smoke monster is. Ben says he doesn't know. Then Ben breaks out into all the biographical detail about every one of the new crew. Locke asks how Ben knows all of this, and Ben says it's because he has a mole on their boat.
