Natalie was just five months old when she was abducted by a woman posing as a store detective. On May 2, 1988 Natalie’s mum Maggie was approached by abductor Delia McCall who offered to watch Maggie’s three children while she demanded Maggie come back into the store.
It was during this time Natalie was stolen leaving behind sister Louise and brother Kevin. She was taken for five days and found 200 miles away from home. Natalie has grown up to tell the tale and is now a student at Cardiff University but mum Maggie still relieves those 5 days and blames herself.
Maggie (53) admits those five days were extremely agonising and stressful and has never lost a deep sense of guilt for allowing one of her babies to be neglected. Maggie interestingly tells us when finally reunited with Natalie – she felt like she didn’t recognise her as her daughter.
Maggie can only sympathise with parents going through the same ordeal “For hours straight after, I just wanted to get out there and search but the police wouldn’t let me. It even dawned on me they didn’t believe what I was telling them”
Paul (52) is Natalie’s dad and a postman. He says he only cried once during the 5 days his baby was stolen, when a hoax caller rang and told him she was dead. Paul held the family together and spoke to a lot of journalists to try and get Natalie back. Paul has vivid memories about that week and says he would never have given up the hunt if she wasn’t found.
Louise (30) is Natalie’s sister. She helped put the photofit together of the abductor. She was also present when the abductor stole Natalie from outside the department store. Louise has two kids of her own now and says it has made her quite paranoid and over protective.
Natalie (22) says she was too young to remember the incident but says her parents have always been very honest with her. From an early age Maggie told Natalie what had happened and showed her the extensive cuttings and video clips of press interviews they had at home. Natalie says her mum tried to raise her normally after the abduction but knows the incident affected her mum deeply as the years went by.
